Promoting excellence in Canadian English theatre
Through the Magnetic North Theatre Festival, Canadians are treated to the best of English theatre from across Canada. MNTF gives us the opportunity to share our stories, to interpret our history and our times, and to explore how we see the world. Magnetic North Theatre Festival is an annual must-see cultural event.
MNTF also:
- Promotes awareness of the diversity of Canadian theatre among Canadians
- Provides a gathering place for artists to share work and exchange ideas
- Increases exposure to touring opportunities, nationally and internationally
- Celebrates and provide a forum for artistic innovation in Canadian theatre
- Gives Canadian theatre a leading presence on the world stage
- Provides contact among artists, producers and presenters for the benefit of Canadian audiences
- Emphasizes the cultural, social and economic importance of arts and culture where we live.
MNTF background
The passionate initiative of a dedicated group of theatre professionals, MNTF was created to draw Canadians in to our own magnetic and magical world of contemporary Canadian theatre in English. From sea to sea, theatre professionals and supporters were recruited to help us realize the vision of a sustainable, engaging festival for audiences and artists to experience the best in theatre every year.
The Canadian Theatre Festival Society was incorporated in 2002 after two years of research and feasibility studies. With far-sighted direction from the Board and the Advisory Council, the plan for a traveling festival was developed: odd years in the Nation’s capital and even years in a different city throughout Canada.
