About ITK:

Our organization is over 30 years "young". Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami has accomplished some major goals - the settlement of comprehensive land claim agreements in the four Inuit regions. The regions are, from West to East, the Inuvialuit Settlement Region (Northwest Territories), Nunavut, Nunavik (northern Quebec), and Nunatsiavut (northern Labrador). We've also been successful during the patriation of the Canadian constitution in protecting our Inuit rights and ensuring their inclusion in the Canadian Constitution.

Now, the Inuit of Canada are in the post land-claims era. We continue to struggle to represent the rights of the Inuit at the national level, and continue working to improve living conditions for Inuit economically and socially. We are seeking equity with other Canadians and seek to close the gap in living standards. An example of this is lifespan. The average lifespan of Inuit is a full 10 years shorter than that of the average Canadian. There are many factors that affect this. We work in a holistic way to address all factors with governments in order to close this gap.
