About Us:
Our History and Mission
The Ottawa Chapter began in 1966 with a group of parents and professionals brought together by their concern for children and adults with learning disabilities. Since that time, the organization has grown into a not for profit organization serving the Ottawa-Carleton community at large. The activities of the Association (carried out partly by volunteers) are funded through the United Way/Centraide Ottawa, and Nevada ticket sales.
The mission of the association is expressed in the following basic goals:
- to disseminate information promoting understanding and establishing better communications between parents, educators, professionals, employers and members of the community;
- to point out the critical need for early identification, diagnosis and individualized programs;
- to encourage expansion of teacher training programs in colleges and universities and in-service training in schools which would equip all teachers to understand, recognize and remediate learning disabilities; and
- to promote legislation and funding for educating children and providing services for adults with learning disabilities
