Commonwealth Games Canada (CGC) is the international franchise holder for the Commonwealth Games and Commonwealth movement in Canada, and an active, contributing member of the Canadian sport community. Led by its volunteer Board and supported by professional staff, CGC is committed to the strengthening sport in Canada and throughout the Commonwealth.
As the host of the first Commonwealth Games (Hamilton – 1930), Canadians have always had a special relationship with the Commonwealth Games. Our Commonwealth tradition, national pride and common Canadian values embodied in the Canadian athletes striving for success strike a chord with all Canadians. Since its inception, CGC has a rich history as an important Canadian sport leader and occupies an important position within the Canadian sport landscape. CGC has always had a profound and unique impact on Canadian sport, rooted in its innovative, values-based and athlete centered approach to policy and decision making.
In this Games year (2008), CGC made an even stronger contribution to building the future of Canadian sport through its Games leadership role, “international development through sport” programs and innovative approaches to athlete and high performance sport development. Going forward to 2010, Commonwealth Games Canada looks to “build on momentum” currently residing in Canadian sport and extend the CGC legacy as a critical and integral part of the Canadian sport system.
