About the CHEO Foundation

Long before the Hospital existed, a group of concerned citizens organized to raise funds for a bilingual health-care facility dedicated to the needs of children.

By 1972, this committee, later to become the Foundation, had raised more than $4 million. In 1974, CHEO opened its doors, thanks in large part to their fund-raising efforts.

The purpose of the Foundation is "to further the physical, mental and social well-being of children and their families in Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec by raising, managing and disbursing funds."

The Foundation raises funds by soliciting donations, receiving planned gifts, bequests and grants, and by organizing special events and lotteries.

Throughout the year, approximately 150 special events are held for CHEO. These range from dances to barbecues and include events as widely known as Tour Nortel, the Kiwanis Duck Race for Tiny Hearts sponsored by Farmboy, and Charithon softball marathon. A consistent aim of the Foundation is to keep special events as family oriented as possible.

The Foundation's main event is the CJOH Telethon for CHEO. Our Telethon is part of the North America wide Children's Miracle Network. All funds raised locally benefit CHEO.

Funds raised by the Foundation help to:

  • fund research,
  • purchase new equipment
  • enhance the paediatric nature of the Hospital,
  • train staff, and
  • assist families in crisis.

The Foundation takes pride in its supports of two fellowships. CHEO established the H.H. Popham Fellowship to acknowledge the contribution of Hall Popham, who played a key role in the planning and construction of the Hospital. Fellowships are awarded to applicants with an M.D. degree who have two years of postgraduate training. The Clinical Nursing Fellowship was established by the Foundation to provide a unique opportunity to the nursing profession at CHEO. The Fellowship is currently used to fund the Nursing Clinical Scientist at the Research Institute. We believe that this Fellowship was the first of its kind in Canada.

A Board of Directors comprised of active members of the community, the President of the Foundation, the Hospital's President, Chair, and a Hospital staff representative manages the Foundation.

Frederick M. Bartlett, former Vice President of Telesat Canada and Chair of the United Way Campaign in 1993 is President of the Foundation.
