About Us:

Structure
ALSO is an incorporated non-profit organization and a registered charity. The Annual General Meeting is held in the fall. also is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors, and advised by committees.

Funding
Current Major Funders are the Ministry of Training Colleges and Universities, the Ministry for Community, Family and Children Services, City of Ottawa, United Way International, and the Ontario Trillium Foundation. Significant funding has also been received from the Kiwanis Club of Ottawa, the Ottawa Citizen Raise-a-Reader Campaign, the Ottawa Community Foundation, The Ontario Early Years Centre, The Company of Fools, The Ottawa Citizen Literacy Foundation, The Harold Crabtree Foundation, and Starbucks Corporation. Other support from Usborne books, and Canada Post.

Students:

ALSO students are 19 years of age and older, and have been out of school for at least one year. They all share a desire to improve their basic skills. These include reading, writing, spelling, numeracy (arithmetic), critical thinking, research, categorizing, organizing and introductory computers. As part of the assessment process, students identify what skills they want to improve.

Board Members:

Board members bring a variety of professional and life experience to their board service. Currently, the ALSO Board has eight members, professional educators, consultants, civil servants, people from business and finance, and other community members.
